About
I’m a Special Care Counsellor who kicked off my career in mental health and addictions five years ago with an internship at an internal addiction treatment center. Since then, I’ve graduated from Champlain Regional College (Lennoxville Campus) with a Special Care Counselling DEC. I’ve worked in specialized teams that provide mental health case management, a psychiatric unit, an out-patient addiction treatment center, and am currently working at a community organisation responding to the varied needs of a disfavored population. I tend to subscribe to the strengths model of case management, having established many helping relationships that have had a lasting impact in the lives of my clients. I have always been a strong believer in client centered approaches which has been reflected in my use of intervention techniques derived from this model.

Special Care Counsellor / Technicien en Éducation Spécialisé
The role of a Special Care Counsellor (aka a TES in French) is to accompany vulnerable populations through difficult impasses in their lives. They do this by implementing several techniques and tools with the sole objective of improving the client’s life. My chosen domain happens to be mental health and addictions, meaning I can implement my skills in active listening and problem solving to help you figure out where you want to go in life, and how to get there. One tool that is used in many resources that implement Special Care Counsellors is the intervention plan. I use this tool in all cases, so with a regular follow-up, a plan can be created, implemented, and revised. An action plan, while similar to the intervention plan as it lays out a road map to achieve your specific goals, can be used to turn a mountain into a mole-hill. With the action plan, together, we can break down your large objectives into small, actionable steps, catered to your specific needs and motivation. It is my belief that you are the expert of your own life, and therefore everything is established at your own personal pace of recovery.

The Strengths Model
The Strengths Model is one of many approaches that has proven to be useful at helping individuals experiencing difficulties in their lives. It’s community oriented, meaning, within best practices, consultations are held within the common places that you frequent (be it coffee shops, parks, etc…), but adaptations can be made to meet you however you are most comfortable (at home, online, etc…). I use a tool called the Strengths Assessment to review, with you, the sources of strength in your life. This assessment takes into consideration 7 different life spheres that work to make a well-rounded and fulfilled person. It is a process that can last the entire duration of our helping relationship as things are constantly added and evolving over time.
